Continued with my Alexia Bittar styles last night. Earrings and a hinge bracelet.
Felt very Alexis Bittar today during my lunch hour sketching time
Here are a series of “File Rings” I made for our show, part of the Toronto International Jewellery Festival. We wanted to showcase the beauty of our everyday jewellery tools and show that they too can be seen as precious. I hot forged steel needle files into rings and soldered an piece of 18 ‘ish’ karat gold into the seam. I used half round, round, 3 square and barrette #2 and #4 files to give various profiles and shapes to the rings. I love the bold contrast between the oxidized steel and yellow gold.
This is a typical 3 stone ring design with a clever twist. Instead of setting gemstones, I set the steel burrs used in the actual process of gem-setting. These cutting tools are used to grove the metal where the stones would sit. This was another ring I made part of my contribution to our exhibition at the SNAG Conference and during TIJF. It will be up for a few more days…so hurry on in if you’d like to see this tongue-in-cheek contemporary art jewellery show! It’s at Made You Look, 1338 Queen St West, Toronto. We will be closed Monday 20th for Victoria Day.
This is how I spend my Sunday, designing and Laundry.
